How to remove dust from Dried Flowers Arrangements and Preserved Flowers?

There are a couple of simple ways to clean dried flowers. You can:

• Take the flowers outside and use a hairdryer on ‘low’ and ‘cool’. Gently blow away any dust that forms on the flowers.
• Lightly dust your flowers with a soft feather duster. Just be cautious as dried flowers are often delicate so this method is best for stronger arrangements.

Why Is There Mold On Dried Flowers?

Dried flowers will only develop mold if they are not stored correctly or if they are not cared for properly.

We often see dried flower arrangements being displayed in bathrooms - they may look great in the beginning but as the bathroom is often humid and wet, this will encourage the growth of mold and mildew on your dried and preserved flower arrangements.

Your flowers may also develop mold if they are in a room with no air ventilation and no filtered lighting.

How To Remove Mold On Dried Flowers

Maybe your flowers have been on display in your bathroom for months and they have grown mold. Should you throw them away? Can you save them?

There are a few ways you can remove mold on dried flowers:

Using Table Salt (Preferred Method):

1. Pour table salt into a large freezer or grocery bag.
2. Carefully lay the dried flowers in the bag and cover with salt. Then, gently shake the bag
3. The table salt will lightly scrub dust, dirt and mildew that has formed on the flowers.
4. If there are any spots remaining, use an old soft toothbrush and gently brush the petals.

Using Sulphur Dust:

1. Buy sulphur dust - often available at a garden nursery or trade store
2. Wear safety gloves and glasses before cleaning
3. Use a soft old toothbrush or cotton bud and lightly scrub or brush the mold spots on the flowers with the sulphur dust.
4. Ensure all of the sulphur dust has been removed from the flowers before placing on display.

How to refresh Dried Flowers

After you have had your dried flower arrangement for a few years, the colours may start to fade and the flowers may look a little sad if they have been exposed to direct heating or air conditioning.

You can gently spruce the flowers up by carefully handling them and moving the stems back to their original position.

How to store Dried Flowers?

Store your flowers in a well ventilated room, away from direct sunlight, wind and humidity.

We love placing our dried flower arrangements on our entertainment unit, bedside table and in our daughter’s nursery.

If you are going to store your dried flowers for later use - wrap them in tissue paper to prevent them from attaining any moisture. Place the flowers in a box or airtight container and in a cupboard until they are needed.
